What we know

  • U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures won reelection in Alabama despite Republicans reshaping his district to reduce Black voting-age population from 48% to 40%
  • Keisha Lance Bottoms was elected governor of Georgia, becoming the first Black woman in U.S. history elected as a governor
  • Black women also won races for Georgia attorney general, secretary of state, agriculture commissioner, insurance commissioner, labor commissioner and school superintendent
  • U.S. Rep. Don Davis, a Black Democrat, won reelection in a North Carolina district Republicans had redrawn to favor the GOP
  • In Florida, Democratic Senate nominee Angie Nixon lost by fewer than 3 percentage points in a state Republicans had won by nearly 20 points four years earlier
  • In Louisiana, Republican Julia Letlow won the Senate race by fewer than 2 percentage points against Democrat Jamie Davis, in a state Trump carried by 22 points in 2024

What we don’t know yet

  • Scott Colom's race against Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith in Mississippi was still a 'razor-thin battle' as of the article
  • Justin Pearson's Tennessee congressional race was described as close and had 'not been called' by the AP
  • With votes still being tallied, the scale of Congressional Black Caucus seat losses nationally was not yet determined

Open questions

  • Who ultimately won the Mississippi Senate race between Scott Colom and Cindy Hyde-Smith?
  • Was Justin Pearson's Tennessee congressional race ever officially called?
  • How many seats did the Congressional Black Caucus actually lose once all votes were tallied?
  • Will the Democratic Party change its investment strategy in Southern states as Harris and Abrams suggested?
