What we know
What we know: A referendum on Trump, election monitors and a Democratic shift: What to watch on Election Day
Compiled Nov 3

What we know
- President Trump has repeatedly told supporters to pretend he's on the ballot this Election Day, though he is not actually running
- More than 50 million Americans had already voted before Election Day
- Republicans hold a 220-215 House majority and 53-47 Senate majority heading into the midterms
- Since World War II, the House and Senate have flipped from one party to the other in the same midterm only three times: 1946, 1994 and 2006
- Trump's Department of Justice is sending about 1,000 staff to observe voting on Election Day
- A judge rejected the Justice Department's lawsuit seeking to block certification of Alaska's Senate race
- The Trump administration tried and failed to block California from counting 20,000 ballots from people it identified as 'likely' noncitizens
- Maryland's Wes Moore is currently the only Black governor in the United States
What we don’t know yet
- The Trump administration says it has 'no current plans' to dispatch federal immigration agents or the National Guard to polling places, though observers fear this could happen
- It's unclear how big a swing there could be in the House given redistricting and partisan geographic divides
- Whether redistricting will end up being a clear Republican benefit or backfire due to unintended consequences won't be known until results come in
- Whether Hispanic, Black and younger voters who swung toward Trump in 2024 will now rebuke him is still to be determined
Open questions
- Will Democrats win majorities in the House and/or Senate?
- Will Trump or his administration interfere with the voting process on Election Day?
- Will redistricting ultimately help or hurt Republicans once results come in?
- Will minority and younger voters who backed Trump in 2024 vote against his party this time?
